Crochet Change Purse *Free Pattern*

I've been doing a lot of blogging lately. But hey, It's been a while since I shared one my crochet projects with you. I have a lot of crafty, crochet and artsy blog friends out there and I don't want to leave you out.

Say hello to this little crocheted change purse.

Well, I'm so tickled over this one that I'm delighted to share my pattern with you.

That's right. MY pattern. I have been wanting to make one of these little purses for some time now but could never find a pattern that I understood or that was written in English. I could have easily purchased a pattern but I do not want to buy one then find out I don't understand the instructions and my money is wasted. Its happened before. I just fiddled and farted around with this one until It worked.

I use this one to hold my change most of the time. The clasp has a place to ad a dangle decoration or a ring for my keys but I think it will be to heavy....NO not heavy with change, just with the size itself. I never have change that is heavy. By then I turn it into dollars. I'm just that poor.

Ok hookers, grab your kissy clasp and hook and give this one a try.
Remember, you can sell what you make with my pattern but please do not try and sell the pattern itself.  I'm giving this to you for free and It would be awesome if you link what your make back to me here. Thank you.

Crochet Coin Purse.

Cotton yarn- I used Peaches and Cream brand.
Kiss clasp- Size 3.5inches (8.5cm)
F Hook
You will be crocheting in rounds so you may want to use a stitch marker.
  • Magic Circle (or chain 2 and sc in first ch)
  • R1- 6 sc in Circle (6)
  • R2- 2sc in each sc (12)
  • R3- *2sc in next, 1sc* in next ,cont around.(18)
  • R4- *2sc in next, 1sc in next 2*, cont (24)
  • R5- *2sc in next, 1sc in next 3* cont. (30)
  • R6- *2sc in next, 1sc in next 4* cont. (36)
  • R7-R15 (9rounds)- sc in each (36)
  • At the end of Round 15, slip stitch in next two stitches, tie off , weave ends.
  • Attach clasp (some sew on and some glue on).
Note: if you want to make one bigger, The key is to increase the rounds to fit the clasp when its wide open (crochet circle should be slightly smaller than open clasp) and make it as tall or short as you wish by adding more rounds.

It was so easy to make. Well, until I got to the clasp part. Boy was that a chore! I broke thread, bent needles and may have even said a bad word. So, I'm leaving it here. You can figure out how to attach your clasp yourself. I'm just a crocheter.

If you can't crochet and wish to have one of these, head over to my shop where I may have a few listed. If I'm sold out, just send me a message and Ill whip one up for ya.

  1. What a great talent you have, Lisa!! I'm jealous - I am absolutely useless when it comes to sewing, knitting, crocheting, or anything of the sort!

  2. As I have said, you are an artist. Just looking at the 'snap change purse' kicks in memories of Granny's change purse. Funny how the mind can go back to 1942-45 in a flash!
This project is beautiful (and very useful). Neat post!

  11. This is so sweet! I haven't crocheted in years. I really need to try again. I tried when I was first married and did it way too tight. :) Thanks for sharing with SYC.

    1. I have now made over 30 of these little purses! I have enjoyed giving them away to my friends and family. Have changed up the pattern at times and always am changing up the yarn or crochet threads. Thank you for giving us the initial pattern.

  12. I wish you knew how to attach the clasp because I have burning question about the hinge sides. Mine stick out and they are sharp

    1. Im not sure why this is happening. Maybe try using a G hook or add another increase round. Or you could be using a smaller yarn than I did. But either way, just make the round as big as the open frame. It should come out fine. My frame had small holes for sewing it on. you can also try glueing it into the frame. I have seen this done before.

  13. That’s cute, I’ve been sewing a couple from fabric and it takes quite some time to cut all the parts, assemble and then the dreaded part of stitching the dang kiss clasp. What a pain, I Agee with ya!

  15. Thank you sooooo much for sharing your patgern Ive been looking firward ti getting time to make this lovely little purse... Im so excited that ive managed to understand the pattern... Can you help me tho please, ive sewn it on to the frame, no bother, it fitted perfect in the rim of the frame, and i sewed it with two strands of my cotton yarn rather than 4 so it would go through the frame holes, but when closed it dents in at the sides under the frame hinges... I used the right sized frame, same as you did... So im wondering why mines done this?? Any ideas??

    1. Some of mine do this too. It's normal. It could just be the brand of yarn or how loose or tight your stitches are. In these photos, my purse is stuff. If your search “change purse” on my blog from my side bar or at the top of the page, it will pull up some other post I made on change purses and you can see that some of mine are dented in too. Sorry I couldn’t be more of help

  16. Oh no Thank You Lisa that’s great to think it’s not just mine :) , and yes yarn and hook size and a slight variation of the horseshoe shape of the kiss clasp purse frame are all contributors to slight variations I suppose . I will now enjoy experimenting and tweaking knowing that I’ve got the basics right :) , so you were very helpful, thank you, and thanks for the prompt reply ...I can start tweaking with my little purse again tonight now I know that !!

...and I’ve had a look at your colourful, teeny-tiny key ring purses.....soooooo adorable ...you are so clever designing the pattern and sooo kind to share with us who aren’t as clever as that ...ha ha :))) .. Many
    Thanks xx
